The Caine's Wedding

Hindu Wedding

A Hindu wedding is a physical, spiritual and emotional union of two people; it's also about the coming together of two families through prayer and celebration. At a Hindu wedding the bride wears a red dress. So it is custom for guests not to wear red. Below explains a little about what happens during a Hindu wedding.

1) The groom and his party are met at the entrance of the ceremony. The groom is presented with a plate carrying a lit lamp (Arati) and a garland. He is given a blessing.

2) The bride will be led to the ceremony by her uncles. The moment the father gives the bride away is known as the kanyadaan. During the ceremony, the father of the bride places his daughter's hands into her soon to be spouses as a gesture of giving her away.

3) The couple marry under a mandap. In the center of the mandap, a fire is kindled. A Hindu marriage is a sacrament not a contract. To signify the viability of the ceremony, fire is kept as a witness and offerings are made.

4) The ceremony begins with a prayer to Ganesha, the god of beginnings and good fortune and the remover of obstacles.

5) The Jai mala is a garland comprised of strung flowers that is exchanged between the newlyweds.

6) The newlyweds have their garments tied together. They make seven circles around the ceremonial fire, each round signifying a specific blessing.

7) Sindoor, a red powder is applied to part of the woman's hair, symbolizing her new status as a married woman. The bride is also given a black and gold necklace by her spouse called the mangala sutra.

8) At the end of the wedding the couple are showered in petals. This tradition allows friends and family to share in the happiness for the couple's future life together.
